Chapter Sixteen

The next day, Kate sat at home with her mates, uneasy about what had occurred the day before. She felt off, as if the breach of their sanctuary had left a hole inside her.

Logan sat them both on the porch swing overlooking the back woods. More sentries stood watch, now armed with weapons. Claws and fangs didn’t work as well against long range opponents. But now that the humans felt they could stop by at any time, the compound was in an uproar to provide their prime and queen safety.

“Don’t worry, Kate. I overheard Malcolm and Dom talking about Eric’s meeting with Chen. Apparently, this threat isn’t just to us but to all Voiders. We’re going to stop it before it really gets started.”

She blinked. “Good Lord. If we’re making friends with Tommy Chen, the shit really has hit the fan.”

“Well, the good thing is that it’s brought all of us closer together. Jesse’s in charge of building onto the compound. With over a hundred city Ravagers moving in, we’re going to get stronger and tighter before long.”

She didn’t know if that was a good or bad thing. Ravagers kept to themselves anyway, yet some had found a place among the humans and Voiders in Cross Step. Would this segregation strengthen them or put them in more harm from those who would see them as an even bigger threat?

She sighed.

“What’s wrong? Aren’t you happy with us?”

“Of course I am.” She hugged his arm and leaned her head against his shoulder. “I love you and Jessie. But I feel like something’s missing.”

“Huh. I thought that was just me.”

Jesse pushed through the backdoor to join them, looking annoyed.

“Jesse?” Logan nuzzled a kiss against Kate’s head. “What’s wrong now?”

“I don’t know.” He stared at Kate. “Something’s missing.”

“Great. We all feel it. So what does that mean?”

“I don’t know.” Logan sighed. “But I’m happy holding you. That’s got to count for something.”

Jessie rolled his eyes. “Well, move over. I want to feel better too.”

Kate let them snuggle her, and they were right about it making them all feel better.

“I’m sorry, guys. I’m so happy to be with you both, but I’m worried about the future.”

“Something we should all be concerned about,” Jessie agreed. “But it’s more than that. Our unit is full but not.”

Logan nodded. “That’s it. That’s what’s been bothering us.”

“What?” Kate honestly had no idea what they meant. Then again, she hadn’t realized how much they’d cared for her until they’d forced her to confront her feelings. She had a lot to learn about leading her own pack.

“Our pack needs to grow. And we feel it. Which means we’ll likely be meeting him shortly, if we haven’t already.”

Jesse frowned. “I’d know if I’d met him, wouldn’t I?”

“Why would you?” Logan asked. “We’ve been a mess needing Kate and not having her. Now we have her, so we’ve mostly settled down. But Kate’s strong. She needs more than the two of us.”

Kate worried. “This is going to be a problem isn’t it?” She’d only just gotten her men in tune with her guer.
